Pineau De Re Tired but Well after National Win

The Grand National titular race came to an end on Saturday, with a result that shocked many. Favourites Balthazar King, Double Seven, and Alvarado were all beaten clear by 25-1 outsider Pineau De Re.

Only eighteen of the forty runners finished the race, after a chaotic opening saw falls galore. Despite this, all forty runners and riders returned safe and sound.

Over the first circuit many riders parted company. Of the fancied runners, Long Run fell at Valentine’s, Teaforthree was out at the Chair and Tidal Bay unseated at the Canal Turn.

Pineau De Re’s outside win isn’t the only shocking component, so is the history behind his team. His jockey Leighton Aspell actually retired from the saddle in 2007, working as an assistant before making a surprise comeback in 2009. At the time, he said he feared his decision to quit would affect him in the future, but there isn’t much better than taking home the world’s most famous steeplechase—not to mention a share of the £561,300 first-place prize-money.

Trainer Dr Richard Newland, a qualified GP and entrepreneur, has just twelve horses under his training. He also managed to take home the Grand National on his first entry, something many other trainers spent a lifetime attempting.

After a day of celebration and rest, Newland announced Pineau De Re will have a well-earned long break, before returning to Aintree next year to bid to become the first horse since Red Rum to take home back-to-back Nationals.

“He won’t run again this season,” said Newland. “The horse is absolutely fine. He is a little bit tired, he’s given us 110 per cent yesterday.

“I’m not of fan of running them quickly after a race like that. He’ll have a nice holiday now and then his plan will be to target him for the Grand National next year.”

Perhaps this ideology comes from Newland’s medical background; he does, after all, run a large medical business alongside his racing operation.

Newland also noted the horse’s pre-Aintree campaign would likely be over hurdles. He could even take on the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham again, which the eleven year-old finshed third in this year.

“He’s an out-and-out stayer and there aren’t that many opportunities over four miles over fences,” said Newland.

Newland also praised Aspell: “He gave him a superb ride. He’s a very experienced and talented horseman, hugely respected within the game, and in fairness he has been consistently outstanding all season, obviously culminating with that win yesterday.”

The ante post bets aren’t out just yet for next year’s Grand National, but you can be sure Pineau De Re won’t be underestimated again.
